Isn't that the profit motivation? Not that many of us would/could actually do that, but that's what Garmin wants us to do for sure!

Well, I suppose it could be seen as profit motivation the same way discontinuing the DA20 means there's SOMEONE that will upgrade to a DA62, but it seems like a pretty foolhardy plan. Is there *anybody* who would upgrade for $180k after being burned by the same company?

Paper trail sounds like a cop out. The problem isn't that they don't know the history, it's that they do! Insofar as they do know it wasn't originally installed on your aircraft.
This is a "problem" because they are no longer supporting the WAAS upgrade. If you were to try to buy their super expensive upgrade "kit" they wouldn't sell it to you - so they CERTAINLY won't participate in you backdooring the upgrade by purchasing used LRUs and having them installed yourself.
