Good news and bad news at S39
AKA Prineville, OR.
On March 26, not coincidentally coincident with the next publication date of Klamath Falls sectional, along with all the 28- and 56-day cycle updates we'll be switching CTAF to 122.7, due to frequency congestion with 2 other nearby airports on 122.8. This is really good
EXCEPT FOR
... all the yahoos who pay no attention to chart updates. So we're expecting some folks to be on the wrong frequency for an undetermined period

Re: Good news and bad news at S39
Good post! About three and a half years ago, following a change in the CTAF at Carroll County, Georgia there was a midair collision in which a Bonanza collided with a DA20 that was on a training flight. It was ultimately determined that while the DA20, in which an instructor and student were killed, was on the then current CTAF, while the Bonanza, whose pilot also died, had the former frequency set.
My advice is to set the radio, and make your calls, on the correct frequency, but monitor the old frequency on your other comm, and pay attention to your ADS-B.

Listening on the old freq is advisable. But it does mean I still have to listen to chatter from the surrounding airportsSandy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 23, 2020 9:43 pm Good post! In the case of that accident you mention, it was five years after the freq was changed.

Not sure what the airport plans are...but placing a voice recorded note about the frequency change on the local weather frequency could help.

That is planned. Assuming these guys actually listen, it will help. But it's human nature to not hear what they do not expect to hear. And I guess it might have to run more than 5 years
In case it's not obvious I have a dim view of certain segments of humanity.

Re: Good news and bad news at S39
It is amazing sometimes. KSGU relocated in 2010. The old field has big yellow X’s, the runway has been tilled up, and there’s a new technical college sitting on the site. None of that stopped somebody from landing on it last year. Rolled off the chewed up asphalt, took off on the old taxiway, and flew the 7 miles to the current airport. At least he reported it. Said he used to fly here but hadn’t done so in many years.

Re: Good news and bad news at S39
We'll be trying to get the word out to the other two airports involved (Madras and Sunriver) and see if we can have their locals chime in if they hear someone on their frequency reporting to/at Prineville. Similarly for the regulars from RDM and BDN who use those 122.8 airports for practice or otherwise. This is pretty common.

S39 is a cool spot. We've dropped in there before doing Epic LT training. Thanks for the heads up!

There are also plans to shorten the main (10/28) runway by 300 ft. to increase the distance of the 28 threshold/10 departure from Highway 126. This still leaves the runway plenty long and I'm guessing that the RNAV RWY 28 approach might acquire LPV minima (both are currently LP).

Re: Good news and bad news at S39
Now I'm seeing stuff on other social media regarding ADS-B that only reinforces my disdain for a certain segment of the pilots out there:
1. Do not understand the requirement. How clueless you need to be is astounding.
2. Don't understand how it works. It's not that damn difficult.
Of course, the bitching and moaning, which is as expected about anything and everything.
