Very fortunate about my location. My one hour flight to nowhere radius includes Zion NP, Bryce Canyon NP, Grand Canyon NP, Lake Powell, Lake Mead and Hoover Dam.

Fortunate indeed! We did the Grand Canyon tour a few years ago, and the scenery there is just incredible from the air. I wish we lived closer and could explore that area more frequently. Very jealous!

And thanks for the screenshots, Tosh! I actually had a lot of fun doing it, despite the 40kt winds and moderate turbulence... the strong winds became a puzzle to figure out how to make the 180s without leaving the line too much. I had enough fun that I am thinking about maybe doing another message next weekend... we'll see...

Since some people may have extra time on their hands, can you imagine an app where you spell out the pattern you want to fly, and then the app tells you what headings to fly, when to turn to the new heading, etc.? Any pilot / iOS coders out there with extra time?

Hmmmm... an app would be a great idea! It would certainly make the process much easier!!

I did it again this morning - another message, this time just south of Roanoke. I discovered cursive is MUCH easier than block letters. Sorry I didn't post ahead of time this morning for those who like to watch in realtime - it was kind of a spur-of-the-minute thing today. Here's a link to the flight.

:D

Actually, I think the cursive looks cooler, and it was MUCH easier than the block letters last week. That, plus the lack of turbulence and wind today made this one much more relaxing. Now I need something short and inspirational for next week!

Let’s see...can’t really travel anywhere, but need to do more than just go flying. What to do?...go formation flying!

Yesterday a friend and I went out and flew a 2-ship formation In his Beech BE58 Baron and my DA62. We took turns as lead and wingman, practicing rejoins, crossunders, tail chase, etc. (We had both been through a structured formation flying program — flying DA40s — about 7 years ago.)

What was most interesting was doing interval takeoffs: A Baron with 600 hp accelerates much faster down the runway than a DA62 that weighs about the same with only 360 hp. However both planes have about the same rate of climb due to the DA62s more efficient wing.

Had a great time, with our planes practicing social distancing.😀

Inspired by the pilot who managed to get clearance for low approaches at all three major NYC airports in one flight, I decided to try my luck yesterday making the 45-minute trek to see if I could do the same at KBOS Boston Logan.

No dice on the low approach to runway 04R, unfortunately. But they did clear me into the Bravo for a nice overflight of the Charles River at 3,500 feet. Only minimally disappointing and at least the controllers didn't laugh me out of the sky - were quite respectful in denying the request and accommodating in giving me next-best alternatives.
