Home "VIRTUAL Refresher" Study??
After seeing Wayne's virtual flying video and chatting with him about "virtual aviaton", how about a little bit of "at home chair flying"??
Please suggest "topics of interest" if you're "interested"!!??
I'll start with the first one:
What do you do if you go "Lost Communications" with ATC, either VFR or IFR???
VIRTUALLY, think about this first before you move to the following post.........
Since a lot of us are stuck at home, maybe sit in your favorite chair, close your eyes for a few minutes and IMAGINE you are flying in "Wayne's Virtual Aviation World" and the radios go SILENT...........

sitting in that chair was "relaxing" wasn't it??!!
Most of us know, or at some point knew, this stuff. In my case, it is way back in the "fuzzy part" of my brain!!
I started "refreshing" my brain recently when a friend of mine asked me "what would you do, in real life, if this happened"?
He was studying for his IFR rating.
(Same guy I mentioned in an earlier post that his checkride, 2 days ago, was cancelled. Our governor prohibited "non - essential" travel....his DPE then considered his checkride "non essential" and cancelled it!)
Couple of good references:
FAR 91.185
https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/14/91.185
and
Aeronautical Information Manual (AIM) Chapter 6 (Emergencies), Section 4 Two-way Radio Communications Failure
https://www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publica ... ion_4.html

Re: Home "VIRTUAL Refresher" Study??
After a minor amount of thinking on John's lost comms question... I'd follow all the altitude and course (and squawking) logic that we learned in IFR training... then I'd, in this order:
-- pull out my handheld radio, insert the battery pack, and give a few frequencies there a try (incl 121.5 for airliners overhead)
-- I'd make sure my cellphone was alive... ATC may be trying to text me (my flight plan included my cell number).
-- I'd pull out my cellphone, look at the US ARTCC phone number document (stored in ForeFlight), and try dialing a few numbers there... maybe trying texting a few of them (this will likely be hit and miss, as most are landlines)
I'd fly what I think ATC might expect... and land.
Just first thoughts,
Wayne

Re: Home "VIRTUAL Refresher" Study??
Great "extra credit" items Wayne!!
Monitor/attempt to contact on Guard - 121.500 is hidden in the regs/AIM somewhere.
Having a "spare", charged radio "in the bag" is great in this situation.
Use cellphone and Foreflight phone numbers - Awesome!

Here's one source of ARTCC phone numbers (can't say how current it is kept):
http://atccommunication.com/wp-content/ ... Cphone.pdf
Suggest loading this into the ForeFlight "Documents" area so that the list is available offline.
