Garmin VIRB

Post by Boatguy »

Has anyone used the Garmin VIRB linked to a Flightstream? It's supposed to capture all the engine log data and overlay it onto the video. That would an advantage over trying to read the panel in my GoPro Hero 7 videos.

I emailed Garmin aviation support asking how to connect to the panel and FS510 a week ago and have not received a reply. I suggest calling them rather than email.

Please post what you learn either from support of if you figure it out. Wireless recording of audio and telemetry seems like a great feature.

Suggest from Garmin support was:

Connect to FlightStream with Bluetooth
Connect to Garmin Pilot or VIRB app with WiFi
Connect to audio with headset splitter audio cable in aviation bundle

I have recorded video and audio. I can't tell if the G1000 data is coming across or not because the Mac version of the app constantly crashes. Haven't tried the Windows version yet.

I have my Garmin configured to connect the Bose via bluetooth and was able to record my voice during the video. I was able to connect to Stratux using WIFI. So far the recorded video shows airspeed and elevation additional extra information/data. Do you get any luck showing more information in the video?

Yes.

I can see slip/skid, vertical speed and a few other things. Last time I checked the pitch/roll, IAS and some others were missing.

It should be getting everything in the G1000 log but I need to do more testing.

Flightstream, I don't think I have it on my Diamond. Would be interested to check it out. Would Stratux work out in this plan?

Just checked out the flightstream webpage, looks pretty amazing to me. I'd get the 210 if that enable the flight plan xfer from foreflight.
Which one do you have, the 210 or the 510? what's your experience with it?

I have the 510. It's great for flight plan transfers, slow and annoying for database updates. I went back to the SD cards for the database updates.

But I really like being able to file a plan, get my route back from Foreflight and upload it to the panel in 2 seconds. No knob spinning and button pushing. Just iPad to panel. And if my clearance doesn't match, I can change it easily on my iPad and then transfer it. And if you change your flight plan in flight it will also update your iPad if you use that to track yourself in flight.

Thanks for the info, I'm going for the 510. Would assume it has to be from a Garmin Dealer, correct?
