Now you can see why Harrison Ford wound up landing on a taxiway at KSNA.

It is a deceptively busy airport, since it is only Class C but it has SO much passenger jet traffic in and out. And for the 1% in Orange County that is the place to park your jet. There is a bunch of flight training off the little runway and an acrobatics school that flies tail draggers off the same runway.

Doing a bunch of landings there for a few years (my brother was teaching at UC Irvine) really helped me sharpen all my skills. Spot landings, short approaches, dialing in the radios, reporting all the local landmarks, and talking to the controllers in really crisp, clear, terse exchanges. Eventually during those few years when they heard my voice they knew I could follow the instructions for whatever they needed.

The ATP pilots don't like it because of the noise abatement procedures which makes it feel like they are about to dump the plane in the ocean. They have to throttle back "as soon as it is safe to do so" on take off, then they can resume throttle and climb after the beach.

To Steve's example:

I wish LA had victor airways that did a better job meshing with ATC's common requests. Example: how about one (not three) airway to take transit around the busy LAX arrivals.

While I'm making requests, it'd be nice if ATC didn't give bug smashers big-airplane FMS-speak clearances. Using radials doesn't substantively help with brevity either. It takes the same time to say

"cleared direct Paradise, then fly the Paradise two-seven-zero radial to intercept victor eight..."

as it does

"cleared direct Paradise, then Randall: romeo november delta alpha lima, then join victor eight..."


He probably wouldn't have any issues if the panel wasn't squawking "TERRAIN." Curious why the plane was losing and regaining GPS.

Thread drift of my own post, but...

Has anyone tried using the TEC routes in LA? There are a lot of them listed in the chart supplement that aren't on the charts.

I used them constantly when we lived there and all through my training. I wasn't even aware that I was using them at first, but then my instructor explained that the phrasing I was using "One Romeo Delta would like a tower-en-route clearance to Torrance airport..." was a request for the pre-definied TEC route. As long as I didn't go north of SBA, I was TEC all over the place.

FYI - In ForeFlight, you can specify VOR radials and distance by typing ID/radial/distance (e.g. PDZ/270/13)

How do I enter a waypoint using a VOR and distance (DME)?

I think the thread hijack was regarding entering them in the G1000NXi.

If you look at the screen shot, you can see that none of these airways is shown as "Collapsed" and as a result they cannot be Expanded to show the interim waypoints. The flight plan shows only the entry and exit waypoints. This is very different from a G1000 which shows every waypoint and does not include the option to collapse an airway.

It's also different than the Garmin NXi simulator which collapses and expands the airways.

I could possibly have used the "Nearest" function to find BORED, but since it was about 90nm away I don't think it would have made the Nearest list.

So what's going on? Is this an NXi bug or "feature"?

Yesterday, while doing some testing for a vendor, I stumbled on a solution to the problem I highlighted in my original post to this thread (quoted here).

I manually entered this route: DEP: KHTO Route: HTO BDR V91 BOWAN V487 CAM ARR: KGFL

Then I needed to command DirectTO SOARS, a waypoint on V91. As you can see, the panel was only showing BOWAN, the exit from V91. I selected BOWAN and pushed DirectTO. Then by chance I turned the small knob left and in addition to the usual FPL, Nearest, etc. choices, I got a set named Airway, and there was SOARS! So it is possible to use the panel to find a waypoint in an airway, even when the airway will not expand on the panel.

@Boatguy wondering whether you ever resolved this airways issue? I’m having the same issue on a brand new DA40NG in Australia. I only get the exit waypoint showing in the flight plan page (and not the intermediate waypoints)… (and I’ve checked airways are expanded)

It's a bug in the Phase II software that is supposed to be fixed in Phase III.
