Yesterday I renewed my medical with a semi-nearby AME. On the FAA form you may recall one enters whether one has been unconscious for any reason. I have always answered "yes", as in the distant past I've been knocked out several times.
The AME asks me when the last time was, to which I answer "Fall 1971". "How did it happen", he asks. I replied I was on a semi-pro football team playing the Colorado State Prison Team in the old max-security prison in Cañon City and got knocked out on a kickoff return.
He's greatly entertained, relating that when at the Air Force Academy in 1968-69 he was on what was then called the "JV" football team and they also played there. So we had a grand old time reminiscing about the educational experience playing inside those old stone walls against, among other things, convicted killers.
What are the odds?
