Re: DA40 NG Down
Looks like they were doing air work, stalls, etc. They got pretty slow. Maybe a stall spin as the last two entries are descents of 1,000' fpm and 2,400'fpm.

Re: DA40 NG Down
Agree, although I happened to be flying over northern Indiana around the same time and thus can report that the winds at that altitude were around 15 knots from the southwest. So adjust the Flightaware ground speeds accordingly.Boatguy wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 3:41 pm They got pretty slow. Maybe a stall spin as the last two entries are descents of 1,000' fpm and 2,400'fpm.

ADSBExchange.com has a few more data points than FlightAware.
Here's the final data point (-4864 fpm)...

Very unfortunate. That's a very nice website, thanks for sharing Waynewaynemcc999 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 6:22 pm ADSBExchange.com has a few more data points than FlightAware.

The user interface on ADSBExchange.com is quite funky... but they often have much better granularity than FlightAware and FlightRadar24. Seems ADSBExchange collaborates with local Ham Radio groups (e.g. sbarc.org) who have local towers that receive ADS-B signals.dmloftus wrote: ↑Mon Jun 07, 2021 6:47 pmVery unfortunate. Re: DA40 NG Down
Playing it back from about 14:18:28Z, there's a brief increase in altitude / decrease in GS (stall practice?), a dip, a rise, and then they go straight down.

This news video:
https://www.wishtv.com/news/local-news/ ... arlington/
shows some semi-close views of the accident site. The wreckage appears to be concentrated in an area the size of the aircraft itself, and the degree of structural disruption (wings split open, control rods bent into the air, almost no identifiable cabin structure, speaks to a very high-speed impact. We all know how strong our airframes are. Damage like that isn't seen often. I'm thinking stall-spin is a likely scenario, but we will have to wait and see. Very sad.

Re: DA40 NG Down
The Flightaware data looks like practice with slow flight; repeatedly going slow, 90 degree turns, not much altitude loss until the end. And a stall/spin would explain the state of the wreckage.
But wait a minute. A Cirrus-style stall/spin in a DA40? Has that ever happened before?
