Garmin even suggests transferring of these large files by placing them on an SDcard instead of using the FS510.
Is there a way to load the files onto a SD card from my iPad? I always use the FS510 and sometimes I feel for the FBO guy waiting on me to get going...
Jeppesen supports iPad/iPhone loading of data cards using Bad Elf Wombat and iOS version of JDM. I asked Garmin about this and they said there were no plans to do so.
Is it unreasonable to have a spare SD card to pre-load and just swap the cards later?

This did pique my curiosity as to how long it takes to write a new cycle to an SD card. The cards for GNS units take several minutes apiece to load, but they are only 16 MB cards and the actual data downloads are about 7.5 MB. I would think the G1000, et al, having data more analogous to a full-US Foreflight update would be multi-GB.
For G1000 updates, I keep two full sets of 3 SD cards that I swap every 28 days. All of them are the recommended 2GB Sandisk. On a new update cycle, I load all new databases onto the free set of 3 via flyGarmin Desktop and swap them with the 3 cards in the G1000 the next time I fly. To me this is the easiest process to keep everything current.
Thanks Wayne and Dave for the great comparisons between Foreflight and Garmin Pilot. I strongly prefer Foreflight, sure would be nice to have a better competitor for them.

David, my process for the G1000 updates is exactly the same as yours... two complete sets of SD cards that get swapped every cycle. Once I get the swapped out set at home, I immediately upload the datalog (top card) for all my flights that previous cycle to SavvyAviation.com. Works well (even if the flygarmin site is rather clumsy).
