New Foreflight "Hold Advisor"

Post by Rich »

This is an almost really cool feature. Basically, if assigned an unpublished hold, you can create it in your flight plan and have it depicted on the iPad. The almost part is that the hold won't copy to the navigator, at least to the GNS units. I don't know if it might work for others.

For GNS, no surprise there as they have no discernible provision to create an unpublished hold. But if it is to a non-existent waypoint, the new user waypoint will be added, so at least you can couple/navigate to the fix. But if you want to follow the hold path, you'd use the iPad directly around the racetrack.

For me, this is likely to remain unused in the real world. I've never been given a true hold (just directed around an arbitrary polygon via vectors), much less an unpublished hold.

Someone I know who generally knows this stuff said it's not set up for FlightStream yet. If/when it is, it still will not transfer to a GNS.

That's credible. GNS units can only be pushed so far. They're so last-century :D

That said, it's kind of amazing that despite being out of production for 10 years, in the interim my 19-year-old GNS units have continued to be supported with various additional functions, including third-party interface support (such as my recent Aspen installation). No real complaints here.
