Problem with attachment size

Post by CFIDave »

Has anyone else noticed that in recent weeks the site keeps saying that attached photos are too large?

Photos as small as 70Kbytes are being rejected; I've found I can no longer attach ANY photos to posts. This function used to work great.

What's the size limit?

The attachment size limit should be 2MB for posts and 1MB for direct messages.

Trying here with a 250KB photo.

If others are seeing the same issue, definitely log it here and include some info about file format, browser, O/S, etc in case there is some common thread. Dave, if you want to send an example image that won't upload for you to admin@diamondaviators.net, I can double check that there's nothing special about the actual file that should prevent it from uploading.

Never mind -- I found out my Mac was not down-resolutioning my photos properly, so they were more than 2 Mbytes. Site appears to be working just fine.

The attachments tab shows:

Maximum filesize per attachment: 4 MiB.

Should that be update since it sounds like 2 is the limit?

Thanks

I enabled 4 MiB attachments a while back. However, there is a separate limitation on photos that they be no larger than 1920x1200 pixels. I can see about relaxing that, but generally anything larger just takes up more storage space than necessary for forum posting.

16x9 is a standard video aspect ratio, but most photos are natively 4x5, 3x4 or 2x3. Does the forum software allow you to specify ‘long edge max pixels’ for photos? That would be an easy way to constrain storage size and still leave max flexibility of presentation.

Thanks for the idea. I poked around the settings for a bit and may have found something. While it's not what you were suggesting, it may explain why photos larger than 2MiB were not allowed. Trying to attach a 3.2MiB 4k-resolution photo here now. In theory, it should get auto-resized while being uploaded.

When I save the PnP photo, it's 1600 x 1200 = 1.9 million pixels and a 303KB JPEG.

If photos are auto-resized, then doesn't that mean nobody should ever get an error message?

I've not previously seen MiB as a unit. Is that MB (bytes) or Mb (bits)?

MiB is Mebibytes, 1024^2 Bytes or 1048576 Bytes. MB (Megabytes) is technically 1000^2 Bytes or 1000000 Bytes. Thank hard drive manufacturers for the distinction (who use MB or 1000^2, versus everyone else who thinks in multiples of 1024).
