Oil level

Post by 1911Tex »

Max 6 quarts, minimum 4 quarts; got it. At what level do you keep your IO-240 without it blowing out? I am used to a 182, 12 quarts blowing out to 10. Thanks.

I keep mine between 4.5 and 5.5 and it's never been an issue. I'll usually add 1/2 quart when it's around 4.7 and save the other half. My engine is around 1/2 life and it burns 1 quart every 60hrs - not much at all.

We usually run our Diamonds between 5 and 6. Our logbooks state max 6 add when below 5 reading the dipstick. It seems to work out ok. We try not to specify quarts or liters as that seems to add to the confusion even more.

Thanks again to all of you, I really appreciate your input. 25 hours on OH getting ready to change mineral to 20/50 with Camguard. Great little engine, IO-240.

Same with my IO-240B. Does not like to keep 6 qts - will spread the last 1/2 qt on the belly during flight - even with an air-oil separator attached. From 5 1/2 and below, oil consumption is very very low. Just had to change my mindset about adding qts of oil - and get use to adding oil by the 1/2 quart, not a full quart. During oil changes, my logbook entries now say "...added 5.5 quarts of oil..." vice saying 6.
