trying to pm walter about the conversion. walt, can you pm me?
Hi Jerry - I spoke with Walter via email quite a bit late last year about 912S 100hp conversion. He shared a lot of details with me. I think here in the U.S. it could probably be done via field approval.
I'm going to try to speak with the folks from MT-Propeller at Air Venture about their 912iSC conversion that they have an STC for in Europe. My thinking is that it would be a better upgrade path (not much more money).
Feel free to ping me as well with any questions. My local FSDO was willing to work with me on a field approval btw.
Unfortunately the ULS is not a certified engine and can't be used on a K100 conversion - unless you want to convert your airplane to Experimental category.
I am also looking to upgrade to the 100hp. The 912 iS upgrade looks especially attractive. In addition to the likely greater safety and lower pilot workload of fuel injection vs carb (no carb ice, heat management), at 3.5 gph, fuel cost savings would be approx $8,000 over the life of the engine (assuming fuel at $4g average). I've requested quotes from Diamond and MT, no word back yet.
Can anyone with experience comment further on these options: turn-around time, real-world performance gains?
Could a US aircraft get upgraded in EU under the STC and re-imported?
Matthias, check with "Edge performance" in Norway, too. They have excellent upgrade kits, give a good guarantee on some of them and they have a German sales rep
