DA-20 C1 Trim switch on an A1?

I'd like to know if I can upgrade the control grip on my A1 to the C1 version with the built in trim switch? Wiring would be easy for my A&P.
I have a standard airworthiness cert. Is there anyway to do this by the book? The trim switch position on the A1 makes it easy to accidentally damage it when getting in and out of the airplane. There isn't even a guard over it like there is on the flap switch. My A&P was able to do a 337 for a battery upgrade to get rid of the horrid Yuasa battery and install a regular sealed aircraft battery.
