Help troubleshoot a radio issue?

Post by Da20Marin »

Pilot side works perfectly.

Co-Pilot side got progressively worse talking to the pilot over the last few flights and has now failed completely. The co-pilot radio can't talk to tower/ground, cannot hear from tower/ground and cannot hear pilot.

Anyone seen behavior like this and might suggest what the issue might be. It's gonna be a few days before the avionics people can look at it.

Thanks

Assuming you've already done things like using the pilot headset in both positions, the next thing is to confirm the jacks or other connections aren't loose or have a broken wire. After that, it seems like something that is related to the intercom more than the radios themselves. If the "progressively worse" was intermittent sound, this suggests wiring. If it was a lower and lower volume level, this might suggest an electronics issue. I'm hoping it's a low-cost loose connection. If both the copilot sound and mic degraded intermittently and together it suggests a bad connection at the intercom.

PS Engineering PM501 intercom? Sounds like the problem is with the intercom and not the radio. Fail safe mode of the intercom directly connects the pilot to the radio. I think I would start there.

Thanks everyone, it was a bad All/Iso switch, fiddling with the switch got it working again!
