AHRS using backup GPS source

Post by Robin »

Out flying

In the last 4 flights, I have gotten this advisory twice, once in thick IMC, that needed an ILS almost down to the minima. BTW the autopilot flew this beautifully and I took over at 1000'AGL with a nicely trimmed aircraft.

AHRS1 GPS – AHRS1 using backup GPS source. :(

This lasted for 2 to 3 minutes on each occasion. By the time I checked the satellites, which were all OK, the advisory message had gone. No problems for the rest of the flight. Other flights no problems at all.

The Garmin Handbook says for this advisory…

The #1 AHRS is using the backup GPS path. Primary GPS path has failed. The G1000 system should be serviced when possible.

I wonder what you think? I suspect that I might have been short on satellites.

Cheers

I would get it checked out. I would have expected a RAIM message if there was insufficient satellite coverage. That error sounds more like it might be due to electrical interference or a flaky component somewhere.

Hi Chris

That was my gut feeling...

I was hoping not to have the plane in for maintenance at least once, each month!

Cheers

Intermittent problems can be difficult to diagnose. A technician might not be able to do anything if everything is working when you bring it in. A loose connection between the coax cable and GPS unit or the antenna might result in an intermittent problem.

I actually had a problem with my GDL69....I removed the metal box ( plug and play ) in the back; cleaned the connector re-installed it and the warning went away....wonder if this is the same type of situation ..
