Mid-air at Shoreham (EGKA)

Post by Keith M »

This afternoon, there was a mid-air between a DA40D and an unidentified aircraft at Shoreham, with one fatality. The DA40 had just taken off and there is speculation that the other aircraft was making a crosswind join. In the BBC report here, there's a photo of the DA40's propeller lying on the beach, but the instructor and his student were able to land the aircraft on another runway. The prop may have chopped the tail off the other aircraft.

That must have been a horrible experience for all concerned, but an impressive response by the DA40 pilot and it's reassuring to know that the elevator still has sufficient authority without the weight of the prop.

The DA40 is owned by the same flying school that had the tail of another chopped off on the ground by a taxiing C152 last year.
