Yes, thank you. I had actually decided to be a test pilot this weekend (wife out of town and nowhere to go) and create some pitch and power settings myself. These will be a huge help, just need to check for my airplane. Many thanks! Tim

In an effort to keep myself from buying the Garmin SVT I just ordered a 796 to see how well it works. I do plan on upgrading my older Diamond with the Aspen Synthetic Vision.

Tim - does your '04 have WAAS? It is my understanding that you must have WAAS (~$20k upgrade from a non-WAAS G1000) and then SVT is ~$10K on top of that.

No I don't have WAAS. I didn't realize there was a requirement for it. Thanks.

I can't see paying 40K for a WAAS/SVT upgrade while I'm in Northern California where almost every day is either VFR or morning marine layer. Powerflow or the new supercharger, that might be a different story...

WAAS is not required for SVT - they are completely independent.

Actually, you already have SVT. You just need an unlock card to turn it on. And an upgraded terrain database... But it's all just software.

WAAS is another matter - you need new hardware and antennas, as well as some G1000 software upgrades.

I can't get WAAS for my DA42 because I have the KAP140 and not the GFC autopilot and Diamond will not certify WAAS in a DA42 with the KAP140. This is not a Garmin issue but a Diamond issue since it relates to the type certificate which is held by Diamond.

However, an upgrade to SVT can be done. I just don't understand how Garmin can justify asking for $10,000 for a software upgrade. I understand that they can ask any price they want and if enough people pay what they ask, they will turn a good profit. From an end user who has already paid Garmin lots of money to have the G1000 I can't justify an additional $10,000 to Garmin for an unlock card. Who is crazier, those of you who have paid the $10K or Garmin who is asking for that much? Or, am I just too stupid to see the value in a $10K SVT upgrade.

I wonder if Diamond owners approached Garmin as a group, whether a meaningful discount could be achieved.

I'd be in for a 796 if there was a way to make that work.

The issue is that Diamond owns the software upgrades not Garmin. Garmin will not talk to us. Diamond doesn't want to sell it to us because that is one of the only real upgrades to the XLS. They would rather you bought a new airplane.

But we should try to put a group of committed buyers together and see if we can get anywhere with them.

I can spearhead this if there is enough interest.

Lance,
I would certainly be willing to join in for the SVT upgrade to my DA42 (at a cost that should be considerably less than the $10,000 they are asking).
