I first decided I needed to get my own airplane several years ago when I became acutely aware that the standard for rentals available to me was not what I was willing to fly. I wanted to oversee the standard of maintenance as I see fit to a higher level. Whether or not this airplane you are flying is airworthy - and from the description you give it sounds pretty iffy, it is nice to know exactly what is going on with every line in your own airplanes log books.

Just my two cents and I am not an A&P, but I suspect taping the rear door shut would make the airplane un-airworthy. I consider the rear door an emergency exit and not just for the rear seat passengers. It would not be easy to get from the front seats to the rear and out the rear door, but I suspect it could be done in an emergency.
