Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
I just ran across this new AI for sale at Aircraft Spruce. Does anyone know if it we can use it in the DA40? I didn't see any certification information with it. I assume the existing backup battery could drive it in the event of a power failure, just like the existing AI. It's not as sexy as a G5, but it doesn't look like we will ever be able to put a G5 there...

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
It is FAA certified and meets the TSO requirements of the FAA, so I am sure it can be used as a replacement. You can see the certification information if you click on the "Features" and "Specifications" tabs.

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
My primary attitude indicator was taking a longer time than normal to spool up last year, so I thought it was on its way out (2001 steam gauge airframe). I was going to replace it with one of these (about a one pound weight savings). Luckily? my original equipment one still seems to be working well. I did discuss it with my A&P/IA, and he said it would just require a logbook entry as a minor modification.

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
I just replaced my analog instruments with a G3X Touch, albeit its on an experimental, im pleased with its functionality, gained an AOA, ADSB IN, XM, and other VFR map features.
You may submit a proposal to your FSDO you may get the Garmin experimental accepted as a back up instrument, some guy had it accepted as a main PFD in a Bonanza

Frank how do you mind giving me a quick overview of how the Lancair compares to the DA40 interns of handling, general flying and carrying capacity?

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
I’ve had an RC-Allen 2600 as a primary AI in my steam gauge DA40 for several years. It’s been relegated to secondary now that I have an Aspen as my primary.

The lancair is an SUV in the sky, where the DA40 is like a BMW 320, the gross weight on mine is 3550 and empty 2330.gordsh wrote:Frank how do you mind giving me a quick overview of how the Lancair compares to the DA40 interns of handling, general flying and carrying capacity?
The roll rate is much less than the DA40, the wing is a high performance laminar flow wing, the stall clean is 63 KIAS, full flap is 73KIAS, APROACH 90 to 85 KIAS.
Transport Canada requires an endorsement, type certificate.
I did my training with Elite Pilot Services, Bob Jeffrey.
My performance so far is 172 KIAS at 10,500 burning about 13 gallons, my tanks hold 109 gallons.
In handling this plane your trim is your friend, its very stable
There is only two planes with two doors, mine and another one, I guess the Mako will be available with two doors.
Any further info email me directlly
Cheers

Re: Replacing back-up Attitude Indicator
The RCA 2610 looked like a reasonable candidate to replace my iron-gyro AI when it becomes time, until I saw this sentence in the operation manual:
Extreme turns may cause the instrument display to temporarily disable itself. This is indicated by a red “X” across the screen and an “Exceed Bank Angle” warning notice at the bottom of the screen. The instrument should automatically reset the display within 3 to 10 seconds.
In my case it would be the only AI and this seems like the condition in which one would be most in need of its function. Therefore this gives me pause. Three seconds is an awfully long time in an upset condition in night/IMC conditions.
