I bet the retractable DA40 VI with that exact engine combination would be a 190 to 195 airplane - with TKS. Call it the DA40TR VI (For turbo retractable).
Lol Erik you are one-upping my idea! I wasn't really asking for extra power ( I think the regular DA40 can do 150 KTAS on 9 GPH), and RG but why not since we are dreaming? You are absolutely right: RG is not very difficult for Diamond since they already have a design to steal in house.
They would have a *small" issue with the DA40's ridiculously low limiting speeds. But since the purpose of the debate is just to demonstrate that Diamond are not far off making the ultimate single and that it is more a matter of available funds and return on investment... no problem! :)

To answer your question about the DA40-TDI. It was the 1.7 Thielert motor and I got two engine alarms from the ECU including one in short final. As a freshly soloed student pilot, you don't want to deal with this kind of stuff.
No one ever explained to me what the ECU wanted to say and I decided this was not something I wanted to experience again > back to good old PA28 and carb heat...

In fairness to Thielert / Centurion, this was a long time ago and I know they got much better.

Tommy - sorry I missed that before: congratulations on your MEI! Now that's one nice step forward.

Hey guys, I really like this thread but let's try to stick to the Panthera, if possible

Kai, maybe it would be a good idea to create a new thread "post Pipistrel announcement," re-title it and continue with this discussion since it appears to be the topic of choice at this time.

Tommy, maybe I didn't understand you correctly. Anything Pipistrel-related makes sense here. But DA40-/DA42 Diesel discussions and congratulations to your ME-rating are a bit far off. Btw... congratulations to your ME -rating! :D :D

That's exactly the performance we get on our de-iced DA42-VI at 75% power at 15,000 feet flying on cross-country flights. Imagine the DA40 with the smoothness of a diesel engine, turbo, retractable gear, known de-icing, much higher performance, AND the safety of two engines.

Stop imagining and dreaming. The plane you want already exists today in certified form. ;)

Hypothetically speaking, what would you see purchase/operating cost of the Panthera be compared to the DA42-VI?

Purchase - What's a 42-VI? What was the Panthera estimated at?
The similarities - avionics, retract, de-ice, etc. = about the same
Fuel - Probably pretty close of comparable performance
Gearboxes on DA42?
Engine operating cost/overhaul? Is it really only 22K to overhaul the Austro engine?

Dave and Tommy - yes the DA42 VI delivers the speed and economy and I should have thought twice before handing you this whip ! Ouch! :)

... but the investment is a *little* bit on the steep side and I still much prefer the simplicity, agility, visibility, wingspan of a single engine Panthera, given a choice.
The Panthera was supposed to give DA42 performance at a much lower price point ... if it existed.
Jeff, the Panthera was supposed to cost about 350'000 Euros.
Let us now wait and see if the article that triggered all this was a hoax.
I am more and more of Jean's opinion that something is really strange... nobody else is publishing this piece of news... why?
