12 Year Structural Inspection
Has anyone heard about the process and cost of a 12 year structural inspection? Mine will be coming up next year.

Re: 12 Year Structural Inspection
I heard from another pilot it was a requirement. I haven't found it either.

I suspect that you are referring to the wing spar AD. See this DAN thread: link
The work is straightforward and involves applying a small 6-layer carbon fiber patch on each end of the aft spar inside the cabin. Any competent shop that is familiar with composites should be able to handle this. Note that the shop will need a temperature controlled environment to conform to the curing profile. The easiest solution is to whip-up a "hot-box" using a Johnson Controls A419 controller ($70 delivered), hair dryer, cardboard and tape.Wing Spar AD wrote:<snip>
Unless already done, at or before the next Major Structural Inspection (MSI) after the effective date of this AD or within the next 114 months after January 7, 2014 (the effective date of this AD), whichever occurs first, modify the aft main spar in the cabin area following the INSTRUCTIONS section of Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH Work Instructions WI-MSB 40-074, WI-MSB D4-094, and WI-MSB F4-028 (co-published as a single document), dated May 10, 2013, as specified in Diamond Aircraft Industries GmbH Mandatory Service Bulletins (MSB) 40-074, D4-094, and F4-028 (co-published as a single document), dated May 10, 2013.

The expensive part is international "hazmat" shipping for the 2-part epoxy, which - even when mixed - only cures in the presence of sustained elevated temperatures! So the carbon fiber cloth and epoxy are only $80, but the shipping is $210...

Remember that Chapter 5 items are not mandatory for US N registered aircraft. They are recommendations but not mandatory.

Hi Robert -rwtucker wrote:Chris - Where did you get the epoxy?
I bought it from Diamond via Premier. I am sure that there are other very good Diamond service centers, but Brittany makes everything *very* easy. If she doesn't know the P/N or there is any uncertainty, she pings the service team for details and recommendations. She also follows-up to make sure everything arrived OK.
Note that I have not yet performed this AD. The plan is to roll this into the next annual when everything comes apart anyway.

I second that Brittany at Premier is awesome and I buy my parts from them as well.
