.... and the winner is ...

CFIDave!!

Apparently, when I recently updated my databases to the March 2, 2017 version I did the PFD, and then I inadvertently took the bottom SD card out and put it in the top slot of the MFD. Whoops!!!

With that SD card returned to the lower slot of the PFD, and the database update properly entered on the MFD all is well and the red "X" is gone.

Sandy and CFIDave,

Good info about the red X in the altitude tape area - would not have expected that at all with a database mismatch.

What's funny is that in the first photo that I posted, you can clearly see that the bottom SD card is missing from the PFD. I guess no one who saw it was a "Where's Waldo?" fan.

I had my magnetometer in the wing replaced once under warranty early on due to the HDG Xing out while taxiing and the issue went away for many years. Then I would get intermittent issues of the same thing. Not wanting to spend the money on a new magnetometer under my own dime I just ignored the nuisance ones. In most cases the heading would come back to normal after moving forward. Worst case it would come alive as I sped down the runway but that was feet infrequent. In talking with Diamond a couple of years back they then said it was a known issue with the mass balance on the aileron next to the magnetometer. They have a replacement bronze versus steel aileron option that supposedly fixes the issue. Funny enough my issue mainly happened as I started between two rows of tall metal hangars.
I would check the connectors first though especially if you are getting it in flight. The issue with the mass balance was supposed to resolve in flight as was in my case.

Thanks, Phil,

Apparently, the issue of ferrous screws and fittings close to the magnetometer (mounted out on the right wing and accessible through a panel under the wing) was the subject of a Service Bulletin some time ago. We checked, and that was handled on my plane. The check is done using a magnet to see if it's attracted to any of the nearby screws or hinges. In my case there was no problem, although the magnetometer connectors appeared to have some oxidation, so they were cleaned. All seems well now, but I will update if there are any further issues.
