Crooked Nose (Gear)
Why is it that the nose gear on my DA40 is off set under the right side and not centered on the airplane?

The engine components are in the way, so the nose gear is offset.La-ner wrote:Why is it that the nose gear on my DA40 is off set under the right side and not centered on the airplane?

Re: Crooked Nose (Gear)
I don't know about other versions but on the DA 40D there is nothing in the way to prevent it being in the centre.
The hole in the fuselage is in the centre which makes me think it was designed to be central.
It is the leg mounting to the bearing tube that is offset with a large brace on one side. This makes me think it was meant to be in the middle but then they decided to add the bracing and the easiest way was to move the leg sideways.

Re: Crooked Nose (Gear)
I think it was inherited....the nose gear in my DA20 C1 Eclipse is also offset.

Re: Crooked Nose (Gear)
Methinks I have the answer, though it's bound to displease some. I looked in detail at my DA40-180 yesterday. I can see no reason from an engine/accessory perspective that the nose gear needs to be offset. Now it is true that the various airframes have had a variety of engines in the past so maybe there once was some issue with one of these engines. But what is true is putting the nose gear in the center would be in conflict with (ta da) the heater air control box. This is mounted dead center in alignment with the plenum into the passenger compartment. In the case of the Powerflow, it is directly aligned with the feed from the heat exchange box, which was an improvement from the Powerflow folks to an alignment problem with the original exhaust.
