I agree with all of the above.
The origional post said it was not easy to dip the tanks. I was just explaining there was an alternate method.
Seems strange that you would have to carry it onboard, especially as you cannot use it in flight and if the fuel gauges didn't work it would be very dubious if the aircraft could be considered airworthy.
Because of the long thin tanks (a safety feature) there are not many obvious ways to physically check the level other than what DIA has already provided. I think most of us find the fuel gauges accurate enough.
I learnt to fly on an old C150 and the gauges in that were of no use at all. LOL.
