GoPro Mountings and Settings

Post by Sandy »

If any of you are using a GoPro mounted externally to you DA40, exactly how are you mounting it?

Also, what settings are you finding to work out best, whether internally or externally mounted?

I have tried various positions and cameras over the last two years on a DA42. I came to love anti-vibration gel pads as they really help to get rid of jello. There are three positions that work reasonably well for me:

1. Underneath the foot step. This is my favourite position as it is easy to supply power there, should need be. Plus the view downwards is unobstructed, which is usually what I want anyway. It is a nice position for 360 cams as well, if you ask me. Here is a (somewhat poorly stitched) example using two Kodak Pixpro 360 Cams: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvYSTMBb7PI

2. Underneath the wing: I mounted the cam mount onto a maintenance lid, that I the used to replace the original one. I like this position for legacy cams. For 360 it is a so-so position as a viewer feels somewhat trapped under the wing. Also, running power there is outside of what I would consider. Here is an example of what a single Pixpro 360 looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC9opjBvC1w

3. Underneath the Tail: Ok as well, though the view is somewhat dominated by the aircraft, if you point a GoPro cam straight forward. I like it, if you can run multiple cams, but perhaps not for a single cam. Also, power is an issue. And so is coming in slow and heavy for a shortfield landing, if you intend to reuse your GoPro. ;) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnMWNk8u9Uo

I like to use the tie down points at the wing tips. Unscrew the tie down eye and bolt on your cam. I believe it uses an M8 bolt. No good options for power way out there as someone mentioned, but the ride is pretty smooth.

Can you clarify how you mount the cam on top of the wing (facing the left seat/cabin)?

Has anyone used one of these:

To mount on the top wing surface? I don't like the idea of adhesives...

Hello,

I forgot to mention that I flew some hours with the gopro on the plane and with the 3M bonding tape.
Even with an IAS of 150 Knots.

Arnaud.

@Arnaud... How do you remove the 3M bonding tape from the wing? Does it do any damage?

@ALL... What settings do you all use on your GoPro?

Hello,

First, carefully with a cutter, then you pull it.

No damage at all
