Oil Analysis - Blackstone

Post by astaib »

Hello,

Since I have bought my DA40 in april 2018 I'm doing oil analysis at each visit to check the health of the engine because when I bought it, it went back (50 hours before) from overhaul and the cylinder #1 was running hotter (+35 °F)than the other cylinders. Additionnaly, I heard some strange stories about this workshop that did the overhaul (but I'm not responsible of this choice).
Additionnal information is that I already sent the cylinder #1 back for inspection (after the first oil analysis en february) and they neither find any trace nor overheat mark in it.

Today I received the latest oil analysis report and I'm split between beeing afraid and that many engines are running without oil analysis and are working perfectly up to their potential (maybe with this kind of results).

Could you please have a look and tell me what do you think the attachment also show the results of previous oil analysis since february 2018).

Maybe it is better to join a Lycoming forum, what do you think?

Thank you.

Arnaud.

Hi,
Based on my experience these numbers are extremely high. I suggest reading Mike Busch’s book on aircraft engines for some insights:

Certainly compared to my analyses from Blackstone I would concur these are high. And I'm about the same number of hours after major engine work.

Mine are much lower as well. I had 27 hours on my last oil change, so I would expect lower wear metals than on an engine run for 45 hours, but:

Al: 3
Cr: 3
Fe: 22
Cu: 4

All the rest were 0 or 1, Si was 2. I noticed that your Si was 10, which seems very high, and may be leading to the other high values. I would check your intake and air filter.

According to my latest Blackstone report, the universal average for silicon is 6 so 10 doesn't seem that high. My recent silicon was 44 (my previous was 3). Blackstone believes it was due to the sealer/lube used to fix my rocker cover leak. At my annual we replaced my cork gaskets with silicone ones, which were not properly seated and resulted in oil leaks.

That's possible.

Just a side note. If you use Aeroshell multiweight (like the 15W50) you want to avoid using the additive LW-16702 or you get abnormally high readings on certain elements (I don't recall which ones). This is because you're double-dosing, as the Aeroshell already has the equivalent of this additive in it.

Mike Busch also has a company that provides analysis. Last year I paid $132 to be able to work a valve problem. It is mostly set up around looking at engine parameters from Engine Monitoring Systems (like my JPI EDM-900). When you submit a ticket to them I'm sure they will also review your oil analysis to provide their engine analysis. If your interested, website with contact info is: http://www.savvyaviation.com
