Oil temp Probe

Post by astaib »

Hello,

I just noticed yesterday that my oil temp indicator seems to be dead.
It stays at the value of "26°F", and it seems that he is like this for some days (when I look at pictures taken by friends of the panel during flights these last days, I noticed that the value is the same, it also means that I'm not careful enough to this value). I'm monitoring all the time the CHTs, but I'm less careful with the oil temp, and that the proof...

Do you ever experienced this? Does it means that the probe is dead? Because it shows a value (this value is not moving, and is obviously wrong).

Is it difficult to replace that probe? Is it an expensive part? Can it come from the VM100 and not the probe?

Any experience will help me.

Thank you very much!

Arnaud.

Arnaud:

Check your VM-1000 manual. My recollection is that a bad sensor or wiring will display a value like that. I am away from home right now, so I can't check mine...

That is correct. From the VM1000 manual:

NOTE: An Oil Temp indicator reading of ‘26 F’ or CAT/OAT
indicator reading of ‘–50 C’, means the probe is not delivering a
signal to the DPU. The most common cause is an open
connection, or a short in the cable causing the signal to be
grounded.

Thanks Rich, does it means that it can only be a wire that is unplugged ?

I will inspect this weekend

Or even a dirty connector at the sensor or elsewhere. I've had this happen in other vehicles, for example an O2 sensor on a car. Pull the connector, wipe it off or whatever and put it back on as a first attempt to correct.

Is there a special torque to apply when I will put it back?
Is it secured with a metallic wire ?

Thanks again

Arnaud, do you have a VM1000 manual? It covers installation of stuff as well as operation.

I can't post the pdf of the VM1000 installation guide due to its size. If anyone would like it, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Arnaud:

Have you had your oil/filter changed recently? The sensor, wiring bundle, and connector are near the oil filter. It could easily be disturbed if someone was less than careful in there...
