BTW, FF will also display traffic in the synth vision screen, which can be panned around 360 degrees.

This is all good stuff in this thread so far. I'm going to save a link to it in case we don't update the Wiki for some reason.
I spoke to a mechanic yesterday who mentioned that a GDL-82 inline on older G1000 planes is a viable and relatively inexpensive solution for ADS-B out on older G1000 planes. Otherwise it seems the GTX-345R is a popular solution.

Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
As you might know, we started a petition here viewtopic.php?p=72797#p72797 aimed to get Diamond's attention to this topic which affects many owners. As an owner of the IP rights to G1000 software, Diamond is solely responsible for missing the upgrade path for many features for older DA40 and DA42 aircrafts.

GDL-82 Installation Manual, Section 1.3, "System Limitations" states, "The GDL 82 should not be installed with a Mode S transponder." Even our 2004 G1000 airplane shipped with Mode S (GTX-33). The GTX-3X5 is the only option I am aware of for the DA40-180 at this time.pilotmichael wrote: ↑Sat Jan 19, 2019 6:56 pm This is all good stuff in this thread so far. This is a common refrain for the 978 UAT solutions, BTW. The reason is unclear to me, thoughDiamond_Dan wrote: ↑Sat Jan 19, 2019 9:01 pmGDL-82 Installation Manual, Section 1.3, "System Limitations" states, "The GDL 82 should not be installed with a Mode S transponder." FF also has a rather copious number of audio alerts it will deliver. I've suppressed a couple that are normally unnecessary (and annoying), though I may re-enable certain ones in particular circumstances.

Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
Does anyone know whether it is possible to upgrade to WAAS if one gets the GIA63W from an avionics shop? Or is the issue that Diamond (Garmin?) would also need to agree to the STC and they wouldn't? AFAIK the G1000 WAAS STC is different (http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guida ... 44WI-D.pdf) vs the G1000 non-WAAS STC (http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guida ... 54WI-D.pdf).

If you can get them then it shouldn't be an issue. It was a long time ago when I did this upgrade (on another plane) and it consisted of replacing the GIAs with some other things that should be available.

Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
We did the GTX-345R in our club Da-40. Expect about 9k total installed. It is a nice unit to have, sadly with our current software level we will not get the ADS-b WX data on the G1000. Lucky for us we still have the XM receiver. Traffic however is displayed. I wish Garmin had opted for WiFi instead of the Bluetooth connection on the 345. In the diamond with all the carbon the BT reception isn't the best. I have had reasonable luck either mounting the iPad higher up on a suction cup mount or having it on the center console. The carbon fiber in the seats id a pretty good block to the BT signal.

Re: Path to ADS-B & WAAS for older DA40s
There have been many comments regarding WAAS upgrade not worth it. My GNS upgrades were done long ago, when the cost was considerably less ($1500 per unit) than now, so the economics were different. But everyone had that opportunity back when Garmin first made it available (12 years ago). This modification doesn't just provide a slight increase in minimums. Below are the various enhancements in both the 530 and 430 as a result of the change (Most of these are common to all WAAS vs. non-WAAS equipment, not just Garmin units). Of course, anyone is still entitled to judge it to not be worth it.
GNS X30 to X30W WAAS upgrade enhancements
General:
-Position update rate increased from 1/sec to 5/sec
-Improved position accuracy: (non WAAS: 15 meters, WAAS: <1.25 m Horizontal < 2 m Vertical)
-New neat little trick: set up/track/couple track parallel to active flight plan, displaced by selectable distance
-Can be used for ADS-B position source for most ADS-B transmitters
-Still supported by Garmin for repairs
Specific benefits to WAAS for IFR:
-Lower minimums generally, often by 200 ft+
-Vertical guidance (i.e. glide slope) for most RNAV approach types, not just LPV.
-No RAIM requirement
-WAAS GPS can be standalone NAV. It’s not supplemental.
-Can file alternates that have only RNAV approaches (See AC 90-105A, Paragraph 9.5 and subparts)
-For LPV approaches, no cold-weather increases in minimums, as with plain-Jane RNAV
