Oil Filter Analysis

Post by Steve »

Found a small amount of non-magnetic metal when I cut the oil filter during the Annual Inspection. Oil analysis showed slightly higher wear metals than usual for my engine, which usually has pretty low numbers, but the airplane did have one period of about a month when I didn't fly. My A&P suggested sending the filter for analysis.

Just wondering if anyone has had to do this, and if so, what lab did you use. I use Blackstone for my oil analyses, but I don't think that they offer metallurgical filter analysis. Thanks for any advice...

Sorry I won’t answer your question, but how do you identify non-magnetic metal and differentiate it from carbon deposits?

Carbon flakes are very friable - they break apart easily. Metal, well, its metal and is fairly strong. Plus in my case, they are shiny and silver in color.

I use Avlab (avlab.com) for filter analysis. Check out their website.
