G1000 MFD Dark then starts working 10 minutes in flight

Post by jeremywpb »

I am sorry if this issue has been covered, I looked and couldn't find it.

I have a 2004 DA-40 with a G1000 and a KAP140. I have been wanting to get new knobs for the MFD range because the old one came off, in the meantime the range has worked less and less. While my wife was flying the other day she got an error MFD joystick stuck. She cleared it and finished the flight. When I got in the plane to fly it yesterday I booted up the system and the MFD didn't come on, I could see the back light, and check the breaker and it was getting power. So I just used the PFD since I was just doing some pattern work, I also noticed I only had one radio. On downwind the display booted up and came on, although the chart range joystick was inop everything else seemed to work fine.

Today it again did the same thing. Any of you have a similar experience or suggestions on the route in repairing it? Thanks in advance.

Have never seen this but a place to start would be to remove and reinstall the MFD - unseat a reseat the connection pins.

The GDU, which runs your MFD also interfaces with the #2 GIA63(w?) which provides Nav2/Com2/GPS2. So no GDU = no MFD/Nav2/Com2/GPS2.

It's possible that the stuck joystick was preventing the GDU from properly booting up.

Jeremy, I once had the MFD go completely dark... right in the middle of my Instrument check ride! The avionics shop on the field just pulled the screen out then re-seated it, and never had a problem again.

If your MFD doesn't come on and your #2 radio doesn't work, are you sure you didn't accidentally hit the Essential Bus switch (or have a faulty switch)? Those are 2 of the components that get shut down when the Essential Bus switch is turned ON.

Ok I took the screen out unplugged and seated it again, no effect. One other user said it might be a GDU problem or a stuck joystick causing the system not to boot, is it possible to switch the screens to test it?

I suppose you could try, just to see if it powers on. But no, you cannot just swap the PDF and MFD permanently. They are configured to operate in the appropriate mode, and the controls on each are not identical.

For short periods I’m guessing, or you don’t have GFC700? Because otherwise the AP controls will be on the far left, which is not exactly ideal for many reasons. Primarily the airplane was designed to be flown with the outside arm (left for pilot), and all adjustments with the inside arm. And a safety pilot wouldn’t be able to adjust or disable the AP.

Maybe I’ve missed something? We just got our MFD back (and $2k lighter) due to a faulty knob. And we were trying hard to figure out a way to swap in a way that felt safe for card IFR:(
