Autopilot would not engage on SID, fine en route?

I am baffled.
We have our first published SIDs at our local airport. They were just published new this cycle. I loaded it into the flight plan a week ago Friday on the G1000. All looked good except after I take off, I armed NAV mode when given direct to the exit fix, and attempted to arm FLC without success. The AP would not engage at all although the FD was working. Then, when I was given my first en route fix, everything was normal.
Perhaps I missed something? Have others experienced this? I am baffled by this behavior. Comments would be appreciated.
