MSB for 2017-19 fuel tank connection hoses

Post by blsewardjr »

Anyone with a DA40 who had their fuel tank connection hoses replaced recently might want to look at this new MSB. Apparently Diamond will "credit" you for parts and labor.

It looks like this applies to planes from 2017-2019. They probably will provide credit due to the planes still being under warranty.

The previous owner of my 2003 DA40 had the fuel tank connection hoses replaced in 2018. I contacted Diamond with a copy of the logbook entry. They responded that the parts used were "not affected by this bulletin, however we would suggest doing a quick boroscope inspection to inspect the side section of a hose as precaution." I plan to have that done before the end of the year.

It's not just newer planes affected by this SB. I had my (2007) interconnect hoses replaced at my last annual. In fact, one of the invoices listed in the SB is dated during my annual, so I was pretty worried! However, Glenn assures me he has already checked and none of the hoses he used are inculded in the recall.

So yeah, this could affect anyone who had their hoses replaced in the timeframe affected by the SB, not just the new models.

I had the boroscope inspection of the fuel interconnect hoses done and mine are ok. This is a quick and inexpensive way to check if the MSB applies to a particular plane.

I see where the FAA is making this an AD now. 2020-14-06 to become effective August 4, 2020. We will have 100 hours TIS or 2 months to comply.

Rich and others

What I understand from this thread is that certain newer hoses are defective.

I also saw that Rich had his replaced at his 2018 annual. I wonder why. Were those hoses leaking?

I thought that it is no longer recommended that the hoses be replaced except on condition— ie failure. Do I have that right?

Also, in general is it advisable to regularly inspect hoses with a borescope? What are you looking for? Cracking in rubber? I have a borescope which I use to inspect my cylinders.

Thx

This is the old Maintenance Manual section 4 vs. section 5 deal. Mine are 13 years old now and show no signs of problems. No mystery particles showing up in the gascolator or fuel stains anywhere. Nevertheless, these kinds of parts will deteriorate over time and should be watched.

The MSB depicts a way to determine if it's an affected part by viewing the ends of the hoses. And since mine are way older than this I'm off the hook.

My 2018 annual was at 2000 hours, and since I needed to pull the wings anyway (to replace a broken pushrod roller), I decided to go ahead and replace the interconnect hoses while the wings were already off. The hose replacement was not required, it's just so easy when the tanks are already out of the wings, and since it was 'recommended' by Diamond and relatively cheap... why not? As it turned out, that was right in that time frame where the defective hoses were in play, but apparently I didn't get any. But now I'm wondering what documentation I need to get from the shop to prove that my hoses are ok and not subject to the AD?
