It looks like the 5/16" shackle in this link won't work, but the 3/8" version should do nicely. The tailskid on my plane is right at 3 cm (1-1/4") thick.perossichi wrote: ↑Tue Feb 11, 2020 10:40 am I use a stainless D shackle available from a marine supply store or amazon

Re: Tail tiedown hook
Yes. I neglected to say that the extra wide 5/16th is no longer available from Amazon. The link was meant to illustrate what a D shackle is. It took me a long while to figure out what the hardware I was searching for is called.
I have 5/16 that work.
In any event, it is a good looking and easy to attach solution. I hope folks find the suggestion useful.
Obviously, I remove the d shackle and throw it in the baggage compartment when I fly.

I also use a D-shackle on mine. Now, if I can only remember where I stowed it...

Re: Tail tiedown hook
Old thread, but I found an elegant solution so I thought I'd share with the forum as I'm sure many people find that thread when looking for the elusive tail tie down solution for the DA40!
I've had a good experience with PowerTye products in the past, and noticed they were selling what they call a "soft tye tie down" (see https://www.powertye.com/products/1in-6 ... latch-hook).
Pass the loop side through the skid plate hole, hook goes through the loop, tighten the strap, and you're done. No extra part needed. We'll see how it holds up long term!

Re: Tail tiedown hook
I've tried D-shackles, oversized carabiners, and a few other toys, but I've gone much simpler recently. I just make an overhand loop knot with a 1/2" diamond braid mooring line, pass the loop through the tail tie down, and attach whatever the FBO is providing (rope, chain, cargo straps) to that loop. This mooring line from Amazon is ideal for tiedowns in general:

Re: Tail tiedown hook
We use the tieboss. https://tieboss.com/collections/all-pro ... ss-15-rope
The square side of the hook fits perfectly into the rear of the tail.

Re: Tail tiedown hook
I'm cheap and like to keep it simple. I have to attach the tail to a metal hook. My solution was a small piece of rope I found in the hangar.
Make it into a loop. Hook it thru the metal hook.
Thread the loop thru the tail hole and put it into the hook.
Strong, very quick and easy to connect, soft on the plane, free. Mark

Re: Tail tiedown hook
The hole in your tail is much larger than mine, and some are smaller yet (a friend's DA20 for example).
