R magneto installation direction

On my plane, my right side (passenger side) mag has always been installed "upside-down", with the P-lead on the bottom, and a huge pain to get to every year. 2 questions... First, is everyone's like this, or did someone before my ownership flip it over during re-installation. Second, considering you can just install it either way after pinning the L hole in the mag, is there any reason not to put it with the P-lead up? It seems all the wire connections would reach either way, and it would be a whole lot easier. The ignition harness would, of course, need to be flipped over, which would require a fair bit of rerouting the spark plug wires.

Mine was like that from the factory (R mag with the P lead terminal on the bottom). Although I did replace the mags with new ones and had the originals overhauled about 200 hours ago, we installed them in the same configuration.

If you look at the picture of my engine when I pulled it last Summer to fix the loose set screw issue, it appears that if you flip the R mag to put the P lead terminal on top, there could be two possible issues:

1) The RPM Hall effect sensor would be moved outboard, and the cable/connector for it might be too short;
2) The oil cooler line connector (inboard of the mag) appears like it might interfere if the mag were flipped 180 degrees;

plus, the Lycoming manuals show it installed as it is on our engines...

Ah... the oil cooler line does look like it would be an issue. The RPM lead is plenty long. Bummer. Thanks.

As it happens I was examining my right mag yesterday as a side effect of fiddling with the Surefly. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how I ever got that thing out to get it serviced :scratch:

What is your experience with the SureFly Mag/EI? Did you replace the R/H or L/H Mag?

Left for me. See this thread for the continuing saga:
