Re: Possible Aspen installation
For the RSM E5, there is this complication:
Mounting the RSM to the exterior of a composite or fabric skinned aircraft structure is
beyond the scope of this STC. To mount the RSM on composite or fabric skin aircraft
structures, separate FAA approval of the RSM mounting is required prior to the installation
of the remaining EFD1000 E5 system components under the EFD1000 E5 AML-STC.

Re: Possible Aspen installation
Well, putting the RSM into the wing in place of the current magnetometer probably won't be feasible. The opening isn't remotely large enough, with a wing rib protruding over the opening. In fact, I'm not sure how they got the KMT 112 in there to begin with. I certainly can't see how to easily remove it.
If I want OAT I'll probably have to get something fabricated and approved to put it somewhere behind the #1 comm antenna. The presence of the extended baggage is actually a factor.
Lance, do you have a drawing or any other paperwork for that mount?

Rich:
On mine, the KMT-112 is mounted to one of those circular access plates. Remove the three (brass) screws and it comes out with the plate. I took it out to clean the connections...

Re: Possible Aspen installation
The same with mine. But it hangs up on the wing rib that impinges on the inside of the opening. Maybe if it’s rotated just right... In any case the Aspen RSM has a larger footprint.

Re: Possible Aspen installation
Well, for sure if it won't fit through the access hole in the wing, you are SOL. Plus with the lightning protection mesh present in the wing skin, the GPS antenna would likely be shielded. Antenna placement on an airframe can be quite complicated, and you certainly don't want to discover you installed it in the wrong place after you have drilled holes in the composite. I measured about 10 times before I installed my new Comant antennas...

Re: Possible Aspen installation
There is no "mesh" in the wing skin. But there is a layer of carbon fiber, so compromise of GPS signal is a possibility. For now, that wouldn't be an issue as the E5 relies on GPS signal from a navigator. There is this comment in the installation manual:
The RSM may be externally mounted if desired. One reason for doing
so is if an upgrade from an EFD1000 E5 to a EFD1000 Pro is being planned for.
The Pro has the options of internal GPS and OAT in the -001 RSM which require an external top
mount.
