Just wanted to share with everyone that Sarasota Avionics sells individual Garmin G1000 knobs and various kits of packs of knobs. I just ordered the infamous range knob for my MFD for $26. Ive heard a lot of people on here searching for solutions frustrated that Garmin will only sell you a $200 pack of knobs for the entire screen, and I’ve been looking for a replacement knob for over a year. Here is a link. These are genuine Garmin components.

Update: received the Range Knob faster than expected from Sarasota Avionics. Knob is clearly a genuine Garmin component and came with the metal D-ring on the inside. Installed easily with a firm push. I would definitely order these with confidence. Thinking of ordering a couple more to replace a couple of very worn knobs that get the most use.

My range knob on the PFD seems to cause random changes to the map inset range instead of the predictable increments. I’m not sure if changing the knob will fix this but I might try. How did you remove and replace that particular knob since it has the push cursor joystick control as well?

We had the range knob fail on our MFD. At first simply swapping out the knob helped -- you just slip the old one off the joystick and slide a new one one. But ultimately the knob completely failed and we had to swap the MFD for a cool $2000.

I just ordered a few of these loose knobs from Sarasota Avionics. Sadly, I discovered that the volume knob is not the large volume knob (which can be used for nav/com) but the small volume knobs. In retrospect this makes sense, but in trying to save money I'll now be spending more than buying the whole set outright.

If your knob is broken and “slipping” over the stem underneath it then replacing it will fix the problem. If not, then the mechanics of what’s actually rotating in the selector may be shot and as others have said, the only option is replacing the whole screen.

But to answer your question, to remove the knob, just grab it and pull it off, which will require much more force than you want to use. And pushing the new one on will require a lot of force, but you won’t break anything. These knobs are held on firmly with a very snug fit from a metal d-Ring in the knob that fits over a d-shaped stem.

I needed only a set of outer/inner ring for COM, so I ordered this package @ $65.
It says Garmin GCU 475/476/477 Knob Replacement Kit but contains the same parts as G1000. It worked perfectly.
Thanks Nick for sharing the info.
