Re: High Performance Beringer brakes for DA42!
The DA42 doesn't need more effective brakes. The brakes installed by the factory, if anything, are TOO effective.
If you apply too much pedal pressure on the DA42 brakes, it's easy to lock up the brakes and cause flat spotting of the tires, or worse...a complete wearing through of the tire and tube, causing a flat tire while on the runway. Don't ask me how I know this.
The tires on the DA42 are identical in size to those on the DA40 despite the DA42 weighing considerably more. In transitioning from a DA40, the same pedal pressure that will rapidly slow the DA40 with no tire damage will flat-spot DA42 tires.
So unlike with a DA40, with a DA42 you learn not to try to make the first taxiway turn-off after landing. Let 'er roll...

Agreed! It's already too easy to lock 'em up on landing in a 42. Now if there was an anti-skid system installed....CFIDave wrote:The DA42 doesn't need more effective brakes. The brakes installed by the factory, if anything, are TOO effective.

I think this is exactly what it does! Kind of "hydraulic anti-lock.
Please read the announcement - I'd love some feedback as to the usefulness.

I looked at Beringer's website [http://www.beringer-aero.com/en/product ... kits-1.htm]. It looks like some of their braking products involve a simple pressure regulator as an anti-lock device. If the pressure is set correctly, this probably helps a little under a range of temperatures but it is not a true anti-lock and it does not guarantee maximum effective breaking. Frankly, I'm not sure I would want to lose the ability to regulate my own braking pressure toward the upper end. OTOH, I like the idea of using pad material that increases the coefficient of friction with pad temperature. Cost: $7,000 US plus installation . . . I'm not so sure.
They have a tundra product for the DA40 NG as well. From the parts list, it doesn't look like it has a pressure regulator. Perhaps just the better pads and associated parts to manage the tundra tires.

New Cirrus come with these and there is a dual caliper system for retrofit. They do have an anti skid feature and it is hydrolic. Some pireps say it works well for anti skid. I'd think if it worked on the DA42 for anti skid that this would be a nice upgrade as you could avoid flat spots and use maximal braking with out this fear.
