MEI / ATP Training

Post by gsontheimer »

I know, there has been a similar thread for the question "where do you get affordable and good MEI training in the US" here, but it is a bit dated.

I am looking for
- fast track training
- in December/January (this winter)
- in a DA42/G1000 (preferably WAAS)
- affordable
- passionate instructors

to add a MEI to my CFI-I certificate and to collect ME time and night time for my ATP checkride later this year.

I will be coming from Europe.

Aviation Adventures at KJYO, just outside Washington, DC, has a DA42 which rents for $375/hour. I don't think it has WAAS, however. See http://www.aviationadventures.com/airpl ... on_id=1002

Gerhard:
KJYO is my home field, and that DA42 (N506SK, a 2008 DA42 TDI 2.0L Thielert) available for rent through Aviation Adventures is the same plane I used to take my Commercial Multi-Engine checkride while waiting for our new DA42-VI to be built 3 years ago. (I added my MEI a few months later in my own plane.) It has the KAP-140 autopilot and no WAAS, but does have FIKI de-ice and the extended range fuel tanks. N506SK was recently placed back into service after receiving new gearboxes. Aviation Adventures at KJYO has a couple of knowledgable DA42 instructors I can recommend if interested.

Otherwise you might try Angel City Flyers out in California: https://angelcityflyers.com/our-fleet/diamond-da42-twin. They've got an NG model that should have WAAS and the GFC-700 autopilot, but it rents for $475/hour.

Europe-American Aviation in Naples, FL. I have read about these folks, but cannot speak to their curriculum. Naples, FL weather would sure beat DC in the winter. California would be similar, but I expect living/housing expenses would be higher. If you like to golf, I know a good golf pro that lives there.

Six month downtime just for gearboxes?

There's Skill Aviation in Chicago has a 42-NG. I know a few people that have gone there just for that, they have (had) a program for getting folks through quickly. (Rates unknown.)

I was also going to say Capital City Aviation in Columbus (a club) but it looks like the 42-NG isn't on their website anymore. (CCA is also a non-profit club. I prefer those. It's probably worth calling them up and asking...)

I did my primary training with Aviation Adventures. Can provide feedback through private message if you'd like.

While I don't have any personal flight instruction experience with these folks, I think they are very reasonably priced and have been thinking about getting a AMEL with them.

There is a direct flight (Delta / Air France) from Paris CDG to Cincinnati (CVG) which is about 1 to 1.5 hours south of Bellefontaine.

+1 for Angel City, which also has a branch up in the Bay area (Bay City).

To close the loop on my question for future readers and browsers, the duration was not due to supply-chain or maintenance issues. It was just kept off the line for a while.
