Lopresti landing lights

Post by cptndavid »

I visited Lopresti today and had a conversation with Dave Lopresti. 1. They are in the process of merging with Whalen. 2 Lopresti is working on a landing light for our DA 42 s , it will be an 85 watt HID light that will not draw much more power the the existing 35 watt light and be so much brighter. The major benefit is that one on longer will need a flashlight to see the runway . Lopresti will go forward with this project if they see enough interest to do so. If you have an interest give Lopresti call. 800 859 4757

I'm guessing a new landing light for the DA42 will also fit the DA62 -- they may be identical.

Hi Dave, I was thinking the same thing but I failed to ask. I did not realize that the 62 has the same flashlight problem.David

Last I heard, several years ago, this conversion kit was going to be in the neighborhood of $4,400.

I did not ask the price. Is being able to see the runway at night and being easier to see during the day worth $4,400.00 ?

We also have those pesky deer on our runway at night which are almost impossible to see at night.

I completely understand your perspective David.

Since my flying is almost always during daylight hours, this is a modification I would be much more likely to purchase if it had a switchable* strobing feature - and the final price turns out to be lower.

* ideally for both the landing and taxi lights.

Perhaps a more correct term than strobing would be "pulse lighting".

$4400 is terrible. Just depressing

I'd rather remove the ballasts and use the newer mega LED lights available and simplify the setup with ability to "wig-wag." Ballasts don't like firing on and off. LEDs don't mind as much. Tough thing is the shape of the housing.

I'd also be concerned about 85 watts of heat (instead of 35W) being produced right under the pilot's seats; you could literally find yourself sitting in a "hot seat." If/when LED replacements with rectangular bulbs become available, their low power consumption wouldn't raise this concern.
