DA42 tow bar

Post by d424u »

So this is weird.

Which tow bar are you using with your DA-42?

If I go online, the ones they sell for the DA-42 look exactly the same as the one for the DA-40 - only the DA-40 has very different nose wheel pins.

https://www.aircraft-tool.com/shop/deta ... O-04M-DA42

Ironically, I have that exact same tow bar for my DA-40. And I tried - it does not fit the DA-42.

It seems the DA-40 tow bar has female connectors; while the DA-42 requires male connectors.

What am I missing here?

Thank you!

I have a Bogi-bar that looks a bit different than what is shown in that photo. My guess is they are using a generic photo rather than having a different photo for each model. If you go to the Bogert Aviation website, it looks like they use the same photo for all of their various models as well. Having used both versions, the DA42 model is sturdier, longer, and has different pins for the nose gear. Works great!

the Bogi-Bar works well much better than the O.E.M. bar which is a hunk of junk.

Does Redline make a Sidewinder battery-powered tow bar for the 42? I'm sure they must. I have one for my A36 Bonanza and one for my DA62, and they're great: exactly what's needed and no more. You can even fold them up and carry them as baggage, if need be.

Yes they do. I have one for my DA42NG. It works well, but I find I use the Bogi-bar for simple tasks (e.g. pulling straight out of the hangar) since it's more convenient and does the job easily enough.

A heads-up for anyone considering the Beringer brake STC... the pin on the Sidewinder doesn't fit completely into the hub with the Beringer STC, which means the bracket doesn't engage with the fork and the friction wheel can't be centered properly on the tire. I ended up needing to modify the pin by cutting off some of the length and using a 1/2" countersink drill bit to enlarge the interior diameter to fit over the axle nut.

The OEM bar is excellent for carrying on board for occasional emergency use at landaways. For your home hangar I agree it is inadequate.
