So, to follow up with my 80-year-old friend. He checked with a broker and the best they could come up with was $11K/yr (vs $2900 from Avemco). So he's sticking with the latter. Apparently he has been doing his Basic Med exams yearly as part of his regular physicals.

All this makes me wonder about the effect on elderly Sport Pilots, who supposedly require no special medical exams (and some who couldn't pass such an exam), just a state driver license. Here in Oregon, that's like nothing. Every 8 years:
1. Can you walk into and out of the DMV?
2. Can you pass a really superficial eye test?
3. Can you manage to convert with the clerk without embarrassing yourself?

I left Avemco primarily because they do not offer Smooth liability coverage. Been with Old Republic a while now. Of course I have some years to go before I might face what some of the posters are facing.

If you can afford it and don't mind the annual based steps - keep flying :)

Recent insurance quote for 2019 DA40NG - reduced from 2024 and allows me to let any pilot fly with no hours minimum too. Seems like a good quote.

Under 1% hull for DA40 is a great rate from my experience and data points.
