What is a MÄM?
What does "MÄM" mean? I've looked through the service bulletin and "service information" list on the Diamond website but don't see any reference to any "MÄM".

Re: What is MÄM 40-227?
I am not certain but I believe that MAM refers to a design change advisory approved by the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) Design Organization
If you explain what this is in reference to I might be able to help.

MÄM: Mandatory Design Change (means being mandatory incorporated
starting with the indicated serial number) I dont remember what the German language word is but it is about 39 letters long I will get that for you.

Re: What is a MÄM?
The reference to MÄM 40-227 in the AFM revision which increases the MTOW by 50kg is what piqued my curiosity.

Re: What is a MÄM?
Hi Tim,
Here is a thread that had a bit of discussion on the topic.
It was a modification that could be performed on earlier models that allowed an increase in MTOW. Newer models come from the factory with the modifications done so in the older used market you could have planes with 2 different MTOW.

Re: What is a MÄM?
The references to MAM are probably only an issue with the Diamond aircraft in Europe.
Increased take off mass to 1200 should be standard for newer DA40s serial number 40.822 and above and requires redesigned elevator stop bushings, placards and 18mm main landing gear struts. The 18mm landing gear struts should be standard for serial number 40.350 and higher and also increase landing mass. It is relatively inexpensive to have the new elevator bushing installed if you already have the 18mm landing gear. If you have an older DA40 you can get the 18mm landing gear installed but it would probably cost $3,000 to $4,000 or more depending on the shop.

Re: What is a MÄM?
Basically it is all said. There is a
MÄM, a M andatory ÄnderungsMitteilung
and
OÄM, an O ptional ÄnderungsMitteilung.
Literally translated they are mandatory and optional advisories of change.
From a linguistic point of view, it is very ugly to mix English and German, but even Germans and Austrians sometimes understand certain words better in English and so they mixed it. What do engineers know about languages?
Both, Diamond Austria and Diamond Canada use this term. It is of no use to the end customer and was meant to describe ongoing changes in their production so that certain MÄMs or OÄMs were added to the POH helping to distinguish the state of equipment of the individual airplane.

Re: What is a MÄM?
Thank you, Kai. So would it be correct to understand an ÄnderungsMitteilung, whether it be mandatory or optional, as a service bulletin/EO/service information letter bundle of some sort?

Re: What is a MÄM?
Nope. It is nothing official. It is a DAI-internal term. It is a bit confusing, but they use "optional" for everything which can be ordered as an extra or is related to non-standard equipment. "Mandatory" as something that is standard from a certain time of production or airframe number.Tim M wrote:Thank you, Kai. Every aircraft produced after publishing the MÄM will necessarily come with the changes and specifications described in the MÄM, means for example 1200 kg MTOW. Now, if you adapt the changes described in the MÄM to any earlier model, the pages in the POH need to be replaced and by the MÄM and you will be able and have to operate the aircraft within the new limits.
If someone sells you a DA40 with MÄM 40-227, then it will have 1200 kg MTOW. This doesn't mean if someone who sells you a DA40 w/o it, was or is obliged to fulfill the changes described in the MÄM. It's nice to have, but by no means mandatory although the word suggests it.
To make it a bit clearer, here a list of typical OÄMs: CO sensor, HID lights, sun visor for bigger cabin, emergency axe. And here are typical MÄMs: stall horn, MTOW 1200 kg, fuse- and voltmeter check.
FYI, I didn't know all this. I called up DAI Austria to find out. It was quite interesting for me to see how they organize their product updates. Thanks to the friendly DAI employee who took the time to explain.
