What's the width of your hangar opening?

Post by kjmeyers1 »

Just curious to see if anyone here hangars their 42 in a sub 50 foot opening hangar? I think my hangar opening is 45 feet so I'm interested in hearing if folks are able to get their plane in hangars with my size opening. I know with tail draggers you can wedge them in at a 45 degree angle but I don't have any experience.

The hangar I have before my present hangar I had a little less than a foot clearance on each side of my da40 and that used to make me sweat. I'm looking at a da42 but it's going to be super tight.

I had a 50 foot width hangar. The ceiling light was located in such a way that if the tail was aimed at the ceiling light the plane had no problem fitting. From 2008 til last month (when it went back to Diamond) I had no problems moving the plane in and out of the hangar. Anything less than 50 feet would have me sweating, however.

60 feet.

However we usually store 2 - 4 aircraft in the hangar, plus a car and a large cargo trailer.

I wouldn't like to do anything less than 50' on a regular basis. You can certainly turn the aircraft diagonal (this is how we fit four planes in the hangar) but you still need to get it through the door.

My hangar opening is 44 feet wide. No problems with a DA40. I just got a PowerTow, and am still learning to drive it. It helps to have that 2 foot clearance on each side...

I'm loving that massive hangar. You can have some serious fun with that.

After nearly 10 years on the waiting list, I finally have a hangar now - it's 42' wide, so I am still working on the best way to get it in there with just barely a foot to spare on each side. It's uphill into the hangar, too...
