Ice Protection!
Hi,
My DA42 is converted to NG and has ice protection supplement 02 http://support.diamond-air.at/fileadmin ... S02-r0.pdf
It says that it is not approved to flight into known icing
2.13 KINDS OF OPERATION
General
CAUTION
The system provides protection against icing when the pilot has inadvertently entered icing conditions. Flights into known or forecast icing conditions are prohibited.
I leave in northern Europe and Icing is occurring often during winter time. I noticed that supplement 03 (ice protection) approves flight into know icing.
Anybody knows how I can upgrade to supplement 03? and what is the cost?
many thanks

Re: Ice Protection!
If I was you I would contact Diamond Austria, they are the design holder for your airplane, this may be just a case of missing flight supplement from your handbook, and corresponding placards.............

Hi,
I had to get my mechanic to inspect my ice protection system and certify it as FIKI. once that is done, you are good.
Regards,
V

Re: Ice Protection!
I don't know the regulations in US and how your mechanic can certify the aircraft for something after inspecting it but in EASA-land it's all about the paperwork when certain work/upgrade/STC has been applied.FlyingShrink wrote:I had to get my mechanic to inspect my ice protection system and certify it as FIKI. once that is done, you are good.

Sorry I was not very clear in my previous email.I just had my DA 42 certified FIKI. So let me try to explain
The TKS Ice Protection System is a factory-installed option which you already have , so to get this aircraft approval for Flight into Known Icing conditions(FIKI) for this TKS equipped DA 42, owners need to get Diamond Service Bulletin OSB-42-015, Revision 3 or later, completed at a Diamond Authorized Service Center designated for this work, which includes updating placards and AFM sections as well as conducting a TKS systems test.
Hope this helps.

Re: Ice Protection!
Some of the earlier pre2007 aircraft were sent out without the FIKI certification as it was not yet approved by the FAA. You may be lucky enough that you don’t need a new placard ( some went out with the correct placard even before the certification) or equipment and it will just be a functional test. I had this done and certified at SouthTec aviation. I printed the 03 supplement and Glenn did the logbook entry.

Likewise, mine was also done by Glenn at SouthTec. It is a fairly painless process.

Re: Ice Protection!
I also had mine done once the FAA approved the plane for FIKI. It was a couple of hours of time on the ground to make sure the systems were working correctly. I also had to go up with the mechanic to demonstrate that the stall horn went off at the correct airspeeds when stalling both clean and dirty. Once all this was done the plane was then signed off as FIKI certified.
