Weight & Balance App?

Post by Steven M »

Are there any recommendations on a good Weight & Balance App for an iPad for a DA40 with the 905 lb useful load elevator modification?

I like "Gyronimo" on the iPad, it gives you a graphical display with sliders to easily adjust all parameters. I also use the W&B feature in ForeFlight, although I'm not sure what subscription level this requires.

I also use Gyronimo. Love it.

I use the W&B in ForeFlight. Here are the ForeFlight packages:

FF works fine. I also have an Excel spreadsheet that I use. To be frank, this isn't something I do a lot. Only in unusual circumstances do I bother to check to see how close to one limit or another I am. Lots of leeway in weight and CG.

The Excel spreadsheet is something that I've fiddled with for fun. More specifically, what do I want it to tell me? Nice graphic worksheet to show the various envelopes with take-off and zero fuel points displayed is its main output, but one obsesses whether some quantifying of rotational moment or whatnot would be interesting to have in some form. And maybe lateral balance? Too much time on my hands, I guess

Don't remember where I originally picked this up to credit, but it is an excel sheet showing graphical results, which I then added a component for flight speeds (based off interpolation of the AFM tables, and added a few extra "zones" for front and back seat floors, using estimates of what the moments there would be. Enter empty mass and moment for your particular bird under the graph in yellow fields, then enter all the weights, etc., in the top section yellow fields. Weight, CG, etc will then auto calculate and show point on graph. For flight speeds, enter fuel on board at any given time (yellow field under fuel remaining) and flight speeds (vy, best glide, landing speed full flaps) will calculate. ONLY CHANGE VALUES IN YELLOW FIELDS, all the rest are calculated or standards. The first page/sheet is for DA40 with long range tanks, the second one is some example results, the third sheet/page is for DA40 with standard tanks. I don't use the standard tank one, so the bells and whistles are not added. Feel free to ask if there is confusion. I have greatly appreciated this over the years, especially being able to easily pull up plane/weight specific flight speeds.

I too am a fan of using Gyronimo. I really like its graphical depictions of how W&B impact the various phases of flight and how the conditions that you input can be quickly overlaid upon the DA40’s POH graphs. The graphs are also intuitive to use with passengers and in flight reviews.

One feature I particularly like is in the landing section where you can quickly calculate the crosswind component on the field you are approaching.

Garmin pilot has one too. Also have a free app WnB Pro that has good graphics.

I use the Garmin Pilot app for this. It has been extremely useful and straightforward.
