Mandatory 10 year AmSafe bottle replacement

Post by Pbwears1 »

I have a 2012 Da-40 that i gather will need to have the " gas bottles" replaced at my 2022 annual. In speaking with AmSafe, they told me today that the old system has been replaced with a newer one....anybody been through this process lately? Availability ? Cost for parts and labor? From what i can tell, Aircraft Spruce sells a new complete two seat system for around $2600. Any and all thoughts are most welcome.

Going through this now. The shop I brought my plane to quoted $3000 and a 3 month (!) lead time. I had the system disabled in the meantime as both the inflators and the EMA (controller) had expired.

I just had it priced out as part of comprehensive maintenance and it came in between $2500-3000. Didn't get to how long it would take. I decided to go with a placard rather than actually disabling the system.

Hi Josh,
What did your placard say if you did not disable the system? I just went through this at my last annual. When I was reluctant to shell out the $3K, they recommended disabling the system and posted placards "Amsafe inop" on both sides of the dash.

Hi David,

I had assumed it would say "AmSafe Inop" or similar, but I don't actually know since she's still in the shop. I may have misinterpreted the mechanic - I'm all of 3 weeks into aircraft ownership at this point - but I asked if the system would still work even if I didn't replace the bottle and he said yes, they just needed to placard it. As a practical matter it seems safer to leave the system operational even if it's out of date, but this is a good lesson to me to make sure the failure mode for an expired bottle is not working when needed rather than suddenly working when NOT needed.

Part 91.213(d)(3)(ii) says that you have to both deactivate and placard. Apparently this has caused people to fail checkrides before, can certainly fail inspections, and may not pass a ramp check.

HI there, currently in the process of getting the am Safe replacements, does anyone have the part number or know where to reference it for the belt actuator which required replacement is at 15 years. I am looking in the parts catalog, I don't see a refence for it

This is for the 2008 DA40 XLS saddle brown

Apparently these original parts are discontinued. There is a replacement and I was quoted $3000 and a three month lead time but that was at some point earlier last year. I haven't heard anything about availability and have been dealing with enough other issues not to inquire.

The lead time is around 4 - 6 months, maybe this will help with planning your next annual, you can use the part numbers I provided to order the AMsafe harness or refer to the TSO tags on the belt themselves.

As for the actuator, I am thinking it should be replaced also at the same time or on the next annual their time out is 15 years.

Here's the FAA STC NO. SA01918LA
