iPad Pro 11, best mount

Post by Major7 »

greetings - my first post so be gentle. :)

I'm thinking about a knee board mount for my iPad Pro 11. Is that the best? Center stick seems like that could be an issue bumping into the iPad. Can I affix to the cockpit panel, or to the canopy?

On your lap or thigh is probably the worst place, especially for the larger ones, like a Pro 11 (which I use). It’ll interfere with stick travel and expose the screen to direct sunlight, promoting overheating. There are lots of other general suggestions here on the forums for the various types.

One good way to search these forums efficiently is to let Google help. Here's a link to some threads which discuss mounting iPads in various Diamond aircraft.

I used to fly with a 11” iPad but I had issues with it getting too hot as well as not being very usefull because I had to hold it to navigate which is hard in the da20. The iPad mini had overheating issues because I couldn’t keep it out of the sun. There wasn’t a good mount for it in the da20. In the da40 the cockpit is larger so you could get away with it. A fellow DA20 pilot has had success with a cool pad mount for his iPad mini. I felt it too cumbersome.

My solution was:

1. iPhone pro max. Any model. On a Arkon mount, positioned on a ram diamond ball left of the ASI. It stays out of the suns glare, doesn’t shutdown because it’s in front of the vent, and is big enough to navigate hands free perfectly.

2. Garmin Aera 660 mounted below the transponder. This never shuts down and is extremely reliable backup. Also has a second ADSB for backup, internal gps, 6 hr battery life, and you can easily wire it into your 12v system.
