DA50 Experimental at CYOW

Post by gcampbe2 »

I happened to return to my home airport of CYOW yesterday evening to see this beauty sitting on the ramp:

She's a fine looking bird, and the interior looks very nice, especially compared to my DA40. From what I understand it's on its way to Florida for FAA certification.

That plane was at OSH last year. Really nice aircraft. They call it "The Black Knight" on the Diamond promotional videos ...

Hi Greg,

I am now flying in and out of CYOW regularly. I've just been parking at Shell. Do you park at the Flying Club? Do you think I would be better off parking there when I collect my son?

Thanks!

Hi Colin,

I actually learned to fly at the Ottawa Flying Club, so know it well. It is by far the cheapest place to park at the airport, but they do not have any JetA on site. You can probably do a call out to World Fuel, but I'm not sure as I've never tried. You also will likely have no chance of getting transient hangar space the flying club - they are full with the club's planes.

I currently hangar my DA40NG at the Sky Service, which is next door to the Shell Aerocenter. Sky Service is the same crew that runs the World Fuel trucks at the airport, so always easy to get fuel when parked at Sky Service. I'm not sure how Sky Service compares to the Innotech FBO (AKA Shell), but back when I priced out hangar space Innotech was double the price of Sky Service, although Innotech had a much nicer hanger.

Greg,

Thanks! Next time I am doing a dropoff I'll taxi over to the Club and check it out. I've never bought fuel. (It's a two hour flight up and a little more back. Where I clear customs has cheap fuel.)

I was planning a cold weather overnight at one point and called to check hangar prices for the night. Shell was $550 and Sky Service was $700. That's the most expensive I've been quoted for a night in a hangar.

If you want to head to the club, just let tower know that you want to land on the "North Field". They will set you up on runway 04/22 which is directly beside the club.

Wow - I had no idea overnight was that expensive at Sky Service. For reference, I'm paying $1500 CAD/month to park my DA40NG inside.

Ottawa flying club is a great place to overnight. Very friendly and no charge if you buy fuel. They’ve plugged my plane in on cold overnights for a low charge.

Gatineau is another close airport that is inexpensive.
