Inspection Plate Screws

Post by dwurfel »

Just finished my annual up yesterday. When putting the plates back noticed a few of the torx 14 screws were stripping a bit. Thought it might be a good idea to have some spares around. Wondering if anyone has found a source for those maybe at a good price. :bow

For these screws I just go to Ace Hardware. They're not structural.

Rich, were you able to find the torx screws. I think I can find a phillips at ace for sure.

Mine were never torx. They're all hex head.

IPC shows Hex Socket button head. However this may or may not be correct for newer planes. The IPC is not well maintained. The hex heads are easily found, but metric torx not so much.

David, double-check.

My 2008 XLS came with hex drive stainless steel "Botton Socket Cap Screw". Thread is M8-05, 12mm long.
I got my replacements from the local Fastenal store. I think they were less than 40 cents each.
By the way, here's what the inspection plate looks like when 3 of the 5 screws fall out in flight.
(presumably because the A&P didn't tighten them after the annual, and the PIC didn't check them during the pre flight...)

Got everything I needed from these guys, came fast too, but I am local -

https://www.boltdepot.com/

I ordered an excess of bolts from a list I found on the forum. Probably don't need several of them.

Thanks so much for all the valuable info. Thanks for sending the pic of the landing strut panels. I guess I am not a trusting sole. I thend to check everything an A&P does. On the panels I take them off and put them on myself. I use a B&D electric screwdriver to make the task go faster.
